BWP vs BWR Plywood: The Ultimate Guide for Tamil Nadu Homes

By Material Engineer5 min readUpdated: January 2026

The most common scam in the interior industry? Quoting for "Marine Ply" but installing "Commercial Ply."

To the untrained eye, BWP (Boiling Water Proof) and BWR (Boiling Water Resistant) plywood look identical. But 3 years later, one will be standing strong, and the other will be warping from kitchen moisture.

Here is exactly how to tell the difference and what to use where.

1. IS 710: BWP (Marine Grade)

This is the gold standard for wet areas.

  • The Test: Can withstand 72 hours of boiling water without delaminating.
  • Where to use: Kitchen Base Cabinets, Utility Areas, Bathroom Vanities.
  • Cost: Premium (Approx ₹110-₹140 per sq.ft).

2. IS 303: BWR (Water Resistant)

"Resistant" does NOT mean "Proof." It can handle occasional splashes but not constant dampness.

  • Where to use: Kitchen Wall Units (Overhead), Wardrobes in dry zones.
  • Cost: Mid-range (Approx ₹80-₹100 per sq.ft).

3. Avoid MR (Moisture Resistant) in Kitchens

MR Grade is basically commercial ply. It is excellent for Living Room TV Units or dry Bed Frames, but it has zero tolerance for kitchen humidity. If a contractor suggests MR for a kitchen to save money, run away.
